Had a lot of fun at the show with my friend J.C.

Great to see all the behind the scenes magic. They really have a tight pre-show machine running there. We were seated in the Ed Sullivan theater much like one would board a plane. The program staff staged us at Roseland Ballroom. Once we entered this room, J.C. realized he had been there 15 years ago at a rave. Imagine 3000 people in here with another 2000 outside trying to get in.

Daves guests were Kelsey Grammer (ZZZZZ) and Amar'e Stoudemire (YES!) the Knicks hero ushering in new days. He joked that it only took 10 years (laughs).

Ive been a fan of LNDL since 1989. I must confess I have not been keeping up with my late night talk shows (I don't have a TV or cable) but when I was in HS I watched the show religiously for all the (at the time) wacky humor and visits to the lamp store, and throwing things off the roof, and Biff Henderson, and the swearing lady, and top 10's.

Recently I sided with Letterman during his blackmail scandal. He's getting older and will likely bow out at some point.

Tonight I will go to the Ed Sullivan Theater to sit in the audience at a live taping of the show. REALLY PSYCHED! I'm taking this piece of SAVAGE SEVERE history for an autograph...we'll see...

You know? She did a beautiful, beautiful movie. And now she did this Somewhere, which takes place ... somewhere. I know — it's the West Coast, Southern California based.

So why do you give this person an award? You give them an award because they need to be encouraged. You look around this room and you can look around the world of film, and you can see people that had great success early in their career. Some earned it, some were lucky, some got it, but at a certain point they live life. They get into life, like Sofia has gotten into life. She's married. Now she's got a French lover, [Phoenix front man Thomas Mars]. She has two beautiful children by this French lover. And I, for one, am sick of these directors with the homely kids. I can't stand it anymore. She's got beautiful children, and she lives with a man who is the only Frenchman that could play rock and roll, ever. Fuck Johnny Hallyday! [Audience roaring, gasping.] Pardon my French.

So why do you encourage these people? Because now she's had this success, she's had this work, she has this life, she has this family, she has this thing going, and now is when people like you have chosen well to say, 'Let's give this person another boost, let's give this person another boost to say keep going, because now life will come to you hard, like it's come to everyone that's lived long enough. It comes hard and it gets in the way of your career; it stops your career, it stunts your life — not necessarily your life, but it definitely will make your career go left. You show me an actor doing a shit movie, I'll show you a guy with a bad divorce. [Audience laughs.] Right? Right? [Looking around the room.] You know who I'm talking about.

I want the best for her because she's a lady. She acts like a lady, the women in her movies are ladies, they have strength and power and they're strong. With Halloween approaching I thought I would share some pictures in the spirit of the season. I am such a big fan of Hitchcock's classic thriller - THE BIRDS. This summer I spent time in San Francisco and made a special trip to Bodega Bay, CA which is a nice drive north of Oakland. This interest dovetails (no pun intended) with my curiosity with cool film soundtracks. There is no soundtrack to this film - except for Herrmann's slicing mechanical bird scrapes and cries.

The surrounding landscape - nothing but the sound of light wind and creepy quiet

Bodega Bay - This water was so still, I felt I was waiting for something to rise from it. Looks like camping is allowed here. Could make a haunting outdoor experience.

A DESERTED DESERT

I deserted the interweb version of the SAVAGE SEVERE to actually live it. 2 months is too long though.

My head also has been full of odd ball situations all over the map - so been a bit intro. Such is life - inside outside upside.

Recently I had a chance to catch a mind blowing premier - Omar Souleyman live in the deserts of Redhook. And it did feel like a desert - with 90 deg. heat - dusty spaces - and atmospheric stone caves where the performance took place.

I think this was Souleyman's first performance in the US. He is a Syrian vocalist, crooner, and hype man all in one. His videographer and MC was a presence as well (not pictured - had to see this). The man behind the music on keyboards provided live production.

The first time I went to SF CA, I made a visit to Berkley's Indian zone on the hunt for soundtrack tapes. There were rows and rows of Souleyman's music. There was so much I decided on nothing. Fate would allow me to experience this live later.

LA last weekend

Here is the one non-work related picture I took the whole weekend (with a blackberry). I love these letters and the sense of doom on the streets. This is Sunday AM in North Hollywood. Apparently its not too slick at this hour, more my style.

BTW - that's not a homeless person. I don't take pictures of homeless people.

NBA this weekend

Fear The Deer! Basketball season has ended and today marks the beginning of The Playoffs. I got to check out a Knicks Celtics game with my brother at MSG -thanks again John! Knicks won that one (surprise). The Celtics' Bad is Knicks' Good.

NY TX HW

In April I drove a car to a friend and co-worker based in Austin, TX. The whole trip itself from Brooklyn NY takes 28 hours if you drive non stop in traffic zero conditions. I did it in two 15 hour days with a stop over in Nashville - solo...with a mounted HD video camera hovering over the passenger seat. The scene: the US highways from NY to TX in a Mini Cooper (green with white stripes and fog lamps). I had to get there in 2 days so I drove and shot continuously.

This project is architectural because highways and roadway landscapes are designed spaces with a 3rd dimension factored in - MOTION.

I can't tell if the final version of the video piece will be 2 hrs or 20 hrs....thinking 20. The footage was shot with live sound. Largely the various radio stations along the way (super hits, creepy AM, jazz, gun show radio), engine and road noise, and occasional outbursts from me. Screenings are forming in New York & Boston.

With the sudden passing of Malcolm McLaren I was honored to drop an impromptu set at TROPHY in his name. He was a real music and culture lightning rod having touched and redefined punk, hip-hop, club, and international throughout his life . He worked in film and video too producing work and criticism - once appearing on screen to call The Bronx a sub-burb. His last work being the "sound painting", Shallow as seen in his return to Times Square.

I feel a kinship. R.I.P.

While reading about remote deserted communities in California I noticed a trend which may explain something about the way out vibe on the west coast. So many ghost towns it seems are abandoned social living projects; that essentially failed...and in that way maybe they were a success. California's history is tied to a dream - some individual with a (usually twisted) vision of what should / could be: The unknown lands, War, Power, Gold, Business, Water, Borders, Industrial Light & Magic Show Biz and Shiny Things.

Two Ghost Towns that really have stood out - California City and Llano Del Rio.

California City
To quote BLDGBLOG The history of the town itself is of a failed Californian utopia—in fact, incredibly, if completed, it was intended to rival Los Angeles. From the city's Wikipedia entry:

California City had its origins in 1958 when real estate developer and sociology professor Nat Mendelsohn purchased 80,000 acres (320 km2) of Mojave Desert land with the aim of master-planning California's next great city. He designed his model city, which he hoped would one day rival Los Angeles in size, around a Central Park with a 26-acre (11 ha) artificial lake. Growth did not happen anywhere close to what he expected. To this day a vast grid of crumbling paved roads, scarring vast stretches of the Mojave desert, intended to lay out residential blocks, extends well beyond the developed area of the city. A single look at satellite photos shows the extent of the scarred desert and how it stakes its claim to being California's 3rd largest geographic city, 34th largest in the US. California City was incorporated in 1965.

Llano Del Rio
Llano Del Rio was started as a socialist project in 1913 and which eventually dried up like those bricks that remain in their desert surroundings; human friction and fights over water. This heavy desert region is now home to a State Park known as the Devil's Punchbowl.

While in LA last weekend I was trying to spend a few free hours in a productive hardcore window-shopping spree. I almost forgot to note the magical place I found by accident. I had planned to visit Turntable Lab LA and get a far-out, West Coast perspective on the music style jugger but, BUGGER!...the shop was closed for over an hour due to some business-tech issue. Instead I wandered in the Fairfax zone and checked out some other spots: a cool vintage store, an elderly persons vintage store, RCVA, a dark pizza joint that had 4 coolers of beers and beverages under padlock, and an artist bookstore called FAMILY.
Funny, like TTL and the 'Za spot they were having an "anti bad day" with a colorful non-storefront sign and no business cards. You don't need that stuff at this place. Lots of rare, one off, unique hard and soft cover books here. A few records and T-shirts. If there was seating in the store it would be all over. They even hold readings and events in their gallery.

This experience was kind of like when I went to a theater to see The Blair Witch Project, which had sold out. Instead I, like many others, had discovered Run Lola Run.

Where have we been?

In a really good mood!

Winding down a challenging year I realized that I feel really energized.

A special thanks to good friends and feelings. Having you in my life gives meaning and support. Please don't go.

Some new folks have joined the SAVAGE SEVERE emotion, representing New York City with a few folks from the US West as well.

The SAVAGE SEVERE tradition continues - rooted in artistic output and a great vibe to life.

I hope to bring new video projects to life for 2010 and polish up old stones, and perhaps even a 6 year anniversary party for the SAVAGE group - which was established in 2004. Perhaps it will be held on the 66th day of the year, making the birthday party a sort of 666 party. SAVAGE SEVERE is not necessarily a demonic cult but a little savagery never hurt anybody.

In the mean time I'm off to LA during NYE on assignment and hope to get a chance to see some sights.

I'm thinking of doing some recon out there for my future off-the-grid dream home. Im thinking Eldoradoville or Llano Del Rio. An Earthship might be too extreme. I'm thinking 50% organic and 50% organically modern.

I think he took this picture after I finished working and met him in a wine shed for 20 pinbones. I happened to be coming from work with hot tea and treats. The hot tea was used to keep warm cause it was butt ass cold out that night (in case you couldn't tell since I look like I'm sippin Maypo).

Savage Severe member HellRaiser (Steve M) curated a fabulous international art show at site 5 of the BETASPACES expo in Bushwick not long ago. The location was filled with work archived from ARCADE PARK; a shuttered gallery famed for having several deceased artists on their roster. The opening featured work from AUS, BER, IRE, JAP, SCO, & USA. I offered my video; MYSTERY SOLVED / SPIRITUAL PLACE to support the effort.

For the record I had not passed away in the fullest sense; but rather had been reported missing. M.I.A.

This weekend gave me a great feeling about times in Bushwick and NYC in general.

HALLOWEEN 2009

This year's costume had been sitting in my head for some time. I wanted to be a Carnival Steel Drum Timekeeper; basically I would recreate an elaborate headdress as seen on a great Steel Drum record I have....but this year I was on a crunch, having just returned from travel assignments for 2 weeks straight and one night to build Rome in Trinidad. Right.

So I went with the old stand by.

Halloween 2004 saw the creation of The Savage Severe; on the surface the street gang costume is imposing and shields the spirit of The Severe; support and comradery matched by the tangible output of the groups creative individuals. That year also saw one of the few occasions of Savage Severe gathering in one mini-party place.

Halloween 2005 I represented the gang solo with a Halloween twist.

Back in 1996 I was bugging on music culture, DJ Shadow, Hip Hop, and booking shows at the university I attended: The Roots, Brainiac, Morphine, Digable Planets, Spore, J Mascis (when he was solo), John Cale. Music was very good to me at this time...the gateway to what my friend Felix and I would dub "The Nine Seven Style" aka "The 1997 Style" or the strange way music was moving in every direction or no direction; toward the cesspool of 2000.

This summer I bought a $17 tape deck boom box to enjoi the box of cassette tapes I have; rooftop style. I still have a Roc Raida / XMEN tape in there for sure. Not a lick of the Nine Seven on that man at all. Check the 1994 classic year air-check tape on Funkmaster Flex over at OB4ZL

Some time back I got hooked music by an artist named OSBORNE.
Everything sounds crisp and gorgeous. Next generation digital R&B. Even the cover art screams "DEEP".

The sound, mystique, and name made me think of Jeffrey Osborne.

Been a busy summer as compared to last year - which was full of heckticity.

Work's been keeping me busy and the personal projects never end.
And the distractions! Good distractions are hard to ignore. Summer NYC always offers loads of free things to see and do. The inspiration runs on blast like an open fire hydrant in Bushwick.

For example - a possible project in the near future: A new band; Miami Viceroy.

Last weekend I caught another set by the man, the myth, the legend DAM FUNK.

What's that?; Dude's doing a set down the street at Trophy Bar with other music luminaries? I'm there! DAM FUNK brings the heat - he played jamns I feel like I grew up with but never heard before. He also does live vocals over his original hits.

I'm a big fan of tape deejays. They have to work the crowd twice as hard, keep their gear in check, practice, choreograph, and keep the mind sharp. Back in the day I hosted a party called wkndwryrz and one of affairs featured a live tape-jay set by Handcancel.

I was headed to the New Museum for a performance by LEWIS FOREVER

The performance was a surprise treat by this vibrant family of 4 (not 5) who create and involve. Their interactive presentation forced a tour out of their shell, required crafting, spiritual foundation, imagination, dance, poetry, even infused vodka.

With a nice evening on my hands following the show I wandered around the Village making my way back to Brooklyn. The loss was more palpable now, with a tribute soundtrack from different radio stations in cars and stores playing Jackson's music all night. Even construction workers were bumping it on the street. Word spread SO fast in this digital age but it mostly seemed word of mouth as one walked along and overheard - people asking and calling out..." They took my Michael...They took my Michael...What am I going to do!!!!!!"

Say what you will about this magnetic icon lightning rod, he was talented and cared about people around the world. I remember having both the Michael pins and the Prince pins when I was a kid and of course staying up to see the moonwalk on the Grammy's.

Need to kill time in LA?

Go see a movie, Duh!?

I popped into The Montalban and caught a skate film by Jason Hernandez; DEBACLE. The 25 min. piece was great and loaded with the director's choice of Bad Brains music. I was never a skater and never pretend to be (at my age) but I was straight up clapping along with the young heads in the place. The Q&A was great, complete with the full underwriting of the new way of doing film biz (good Producers, short format, rabid audience, HD, buck the trends, f*ck the rest) and Hernandez opened up his FCP edit to show the next wave what was what.

NOTE TO MARKETING DIRECTORS: taking over a film theater as NIKE has is a great way to run top flight media with your company at the helms.

Speaking of the Keyytar - looking at this video makes up for the AM radio quality. I saw the SOS Band in 2003. They rented 6 keyboards with original members and rocked a VFW Hall. They sounded like they stepped out of this frame.

Not long ago, while on assignment in SF I stopped into the always choice record shop Groove Merchant and what should I find hanging on the wall as soon as I step into the place? An original poster for Forest Terry's 'FOREST POWER'. I was shocked to find this piece of next wave funk history just hangin' on the wall - greeting all into this rare groove mecca.

If you peep that video - you can tell how much charisma and flare Terry Jr offers the world. I thought his story would make a great short video documentary. The amazing DJ PJ GRAY had already held an interview with the man on the Galactic Fractures radio show. Forest discussed his prolific career, he revealed his active and driven musical history, talked about his funk groups and shared old and new work.

Forest was the inventor and patent holder of the Keyytar (and thats a double Y for double fly) and just think of where funk boogie and hustle soul would be with out it!

I immediately called my friend Claude Money - another DJ mindbender, another familiar with Terry's story. I was jazzed because I really wanted to shoot a video short on this true funkateer.

Sadly I would learn in my phonecall with Claude that Forest had passed away in this first half of the year. I was really sad, not because I didn't get my story, but because the world was largely still unfamiliar with this man.

Recent assignments have been tossing me around the country.
I spent most of last week in LA and this visit allowed for some great tastes of the surroundings. I cannot imagine living with orange and lemon fruit trees growing in the backyard right near aqueducts - always empty, running in an endless network over the region, scorched dust.

While waiting for the sun to set on Hollywood Blvd (literally) I killed some time and cruse the scene:
a thrift store (Hawaiian shirts)
some cornball 'tobacco' shops
an exotic shoe store
1 arrest on the street
a news stand straight from the east coast

Later I would give directions to a young girl straight off the plane - with two large suitcases in tote. I wasn't much help since I was roaming around too.

So there's a Beauty Bar in LA? The NY location once played host to the ever changing happenings of the OZ experience. Prof. Z & Capt. Heartlock are not to be missed in NYC.

Becoming further immersed and toward a sense of my surrounding space, I stumbled across the LA FORUM FOR ARCHITECTURE & URBAN DESIGN.

Inside, an intense, low lit presentation in progress and a the sign on the store font window underwrote a general on-camera appearance disclaimer. I decided to peek and move on...more on these folks in the future.

The LACE space was right next door. I had the gallery to myself hours before a evening of fun in line with this week’s Live & Silent Auctions

LA’s culture community was def in Crenshaw Blvd full swing.

Big props to the Lakers for taking in there btw.

When I was in High School I went to the first Lollapaluza festival; Saw NIN and Living Color and lots of other RANDOM groups - Jane's Addiction, Body Count (who showed up in a big tour bus with "SYNDAICATE" stamped on the back above a Raiders logo) Butthole Surfers (on stage with a shotgun) and other people.

That concert got the BIG IDEA into BIG BIZ that it was OK to have a very large concert and "Even if you throw them in the mud, they'll still pay to come".

The moral of the story - DON'T GET DUPED and at the time my good friend hated Living Colour because the "lyrics rhymed too much". Seems like DOPE rap/rock to me otherwise.......................................................................

Just back from a mega work tour: MIAMI / BOSTON / PHILLY.

Miami during spring break is like a gigantic outdoor mall / frat house. I won't hate on the fun of others, I was just bummed I would miss the 25 deejay MAJOR party (feat. RED FOXX) by a week because I had to continue on my journey. I have to say, every work day should begin jumping into Caribbean waters and listening to this:

Next off to Boston for the Nieman Foundation's annual journalist meeting of the minds. Gwen Ifill was an appropriate choice as keynote speaker - with her new book hitting shelves and Jeff Chang appeared on deck to discuss matters of the day with other benders of story and criticism. Any event that can bring these two people together is OK by me. Every year this meeting inspires me to create and work into the struggle. As Chang would say, Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop!
While there it was very nice to chat with Brynmore and Brian Coleman, two friends I never get to see anymore. I miss those old school late nites junglist vibes and ill live local hip-hop throwdowns.

Next stop: PHILA

I'm really excited to have been asked to participate in an upcoming art exhibition in Boston. The piece I have selected to submit is a video I created called MYSTERY SOLVED. The MYSTERY SOLVED video is a single shot which runs 55 minutes and features a wooded landscape composition. The scene was captured using one of many recycled video cameras; run unattended.

The piece will loop throughout the show 3pm-9pm.

The more I read about dum dum moves of the greedy wealthy or mixed up child celebs, the more I am happy to do just what I'm doing. My man Handcancel always notes the importance of being less a passive consumer and more an active creator and with fire recently performed in a variety show at Santos Party House (cue the theme music). Bold Move Sir! Advice noted.

Not long ago I decided to shake things up a fun loft party. The funny part was when some dink in the last band of the night took offense to my innocent behavior. Throughout the night, he also had beef with the party host, esteemed guests, and members of other bands performing. The only thing keeping this dude from a smack in the face was the fact that he was eventually "on stage" , commanding attention (not mine). Unfortunately the MAKE not MOLD maxim holds true.

I'm lucky to be not only surrounded by some of NYC's more convenient train lines, as well as 7 galleries (number growing) but also some cool supermarkets. The goods are cheap in tough times and theres a good mix of staples and one-time-only lux items and there are no hot moms in yoga gear. My fav is Mr. Kiwi's who was hooking me up with quick grabs when I was sick and didnt feel like wading through a mess of lines.
